The in-office teeth whitening is, or should be, painless. In the very rare instances when teeth are extremely sensitive, local anesthetic is administered. The procedure takes about an hour to complete. It may be followed either by at home bleaching, or by subsequent office appointments.
Some claim that the powerful light used in the process enhances the potency of the bleaching gel. Research data indicates that this statement might not be entirely accurate. It is said that not the light, but rather the heat produced by the light source is responsible for accellerating the chemical reaction. It has been determined that, in order to make a noticeable difference, the temperature on the tooth surface must increase to around 60 Celsius.
